If you are wanting an authentic safari experience without the massive tourist crowds that have become a regular sight at other popular safari destinations, then Uganda is your perfect match. Due to the good conservation efforts of the last two decades, the wildlife numbers have gone up and Uganda’s game parks now boast a healthy array of African wildlife. In addition, Uganda offers a premium safari experience at a much better cost than the traditional safari destinations.
Lake Mburo and Murchison falls national parks are the two closest parks to Kampala. They are within a 5 hours’ drive from Kampala, and are great options for those with limited time in the country. If you have 2 or 3 days available, you can go on a safari to either of them.
Murchison falls is our most recommended park for first time safari visitors. It offers a greater array of wildlife, with the big 5 all able to be seen on a single visit to the park. For the more experienced safari enthusiasts, we recommend visiting Kidepo, Queen Elisabeth and Lake Mburo. They all have distinguishing features and activities that make them a must visit.
Uganda offers some of the most affordable safaris on the continent. The costs are mainly determined by your choice of accommodation and transportation. The lodges are categorized according to budget, mid-range and luxury. With prices going for an average of $80, $240 and $360 per night per room respectively. Most room prices will include all meals.
If you have your own transportation all you need to worry about is gas, which can cost ranging from $120 to $200 for the whole trip. If you are looking to hiring a private safari vehicle, you will plan for another $120 – $450, depending on your choice of vehicle. The other costs are park entry fees, activity fees and gratuities. On average, a basic safari of 2 nights in Uganda, will cost a minimum of $300 to a max of $900 per person.
